Nature is so beautiful that often I only focus on the blooms and pretty things. But nature is constantly showing me the cycles of life and death which is reflected in this design called the Vine of Life. How many cycles do you see here?
I am fascinated with how things turn into other things before my eyes so I wanted to share how this design was created and turns into other things as well.
I wanted to share an article in Voyages LA called Life and Work with Karen Sikie.
Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Sikie.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Karen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My father and his mother were hobby artist so I was always interested in art as a kid. I made the decision to pursue art while in college when I saw an art book of Gustav Klimt. I was so blown away by their beauty and attracted to the patterns. I soon got a job in an art gallery at the mall to be around art. I also worked as a framer, which is where I was introduced to a paper which became my main medium. I was painting at the time and learning to draw when the papers made their way into my paintings and soon took over completely. I call my work Paper Mosaics.
I am posting now something that I wrote just after my husband passed in 2016. I was not ready until now, two years later, to post it. I am also sharing a picture of myself that really summed up how I was feeling at that time, which was taken by my wonderful photographer friend Tara Gill. I had her come and take some photos knowing that I would later do a collage of myself about this most intense time of my life. The process of that collage I will be sharing soon. But in the meantime, I wanted to set the stage. Please continue to read.
The absolute beauty of Mother Nature is undeniable. Her majesty and scope are breathtaking, but she has a gnarly underbelly. This thorny realm is intertwined with and feeds the beauty that we see.
“Blue Bird Story” on its face is a “pretty picture”. Will the bird have a meal or will the moth fly free? Are you rooting for the bird or the moth? It is a tale of life and death unfolding in a beautiful setting.
Nature has been the subject of art ever since humans started expressing themselves on cave walls. Sometimes their art is the only thing left that can tell us about ancient human experiences. Art is a powerful communicator in that it can both express a point of view and invoke feelings. Because I am a visual artist, looking at and being in nature is the way I understand how to navigate my life. I see nature as a teacher. Below are two of my first collages.
